Green Laser prostate surgery, a revolution

Dr Francisco Juárez del Dago, a doctor specialising in urology, says that the laser is a great contribution to the surgery performed on benign prostate enlargement.
The prostate is an organ that surrounds the urethra, and when it grows, it can obstruct the expulsion of urine, causing a series of problems for the patient, such as difficulty in starting to urinate, discomfort, the sensation of not emptying the bladder, infections or bleeding or, in the most serious case, urine retention.

Drug treatments are used to treat this growth of the prostate, which often resolve the problem. When there is no response to treatment, surgery is indicated. This surgery, which is very aggressive and involves enormous complications during and after the operation, was formerly performed through the abdomen, and is currently performed through the urethra, using instruments that remove the prostate fragment by fragment. This poses the problem of very heavy bleeding, which limits the surgery time, so that large prostates cannot be operated on, and open surgery is indicated.

Using the energy of a laser beam for prostate surgery solves most of the problems posed by the old techniques, since, by increasing the temperature of the prostate tissue, it gradually breaks down, freeing the urine from the obstruction. The green laser prevents bleeding, so patients do not need a blood transfusion. By not having the time limitation of the old technique, and having reduced bleeding to a minimum, we can operate on prostates of any size.

The low aggression and cleanliness of the system makes it possible to operate on delicate patients or patients with anticoagulant treatments, who previously could not be operated on because of the surgical risk, given the bleeding and aggression. This system allows much older patients to be freed from the bladder catheter. In addition, it allows early discharge of the patient, in less than 24 hours, with the consequent saving in clinic costs.
