Partner assessment

Partner assessment

Several factors should be taken into account when assessing a couple who are experiencing difficulties in achieving pregnancy.

We speak of infertility as a situation in which pregnancy does not occur after twelve months of frequent sexual intercourse without contraception, when both partners are presumed to be healthy.

We speak of infertility when pregnancies are achieved but do not go to term. It is, therefore, a situation that involves both partners.

Male infertility is usually caused by low sperm production, abnormal sperm function or a blockage that prevents sperm delivery. Female infertility may be due to ovulation, hormonal, uterine or other problems.

Illness, injury, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices and other factors can also cause or worsen infertility or sterility.

Couples who are unable to conceive often feel stressed and depressed, but there are several ways to deal with infertility.

In our centre we study both members of the couple and diagnose the underlying pathologies, always with the aim of offering the most appropriate and first class treatments to achieve the desired objective.

How is the study of the couple consulting for fertility problems carried out?

We work together with the gynaecologist to take a comprehensive medical history with special attention to the sexual history. In turn, we perform a general and very detailed physical examination of the genitals and prostate. In addition, we request blood and semen tests and a testicular and gynaecological ultrasound, among other studies.

What to expect from blood and semen testing?

General and Hormonal Analysis: in which we will find possible general health disorders or hormone alterations that we can treat or serve as a prognosis.

The study of semen, SEMINOGRAMME, which is carried out in our laboratory with digital analytical techniques can show for example:

  • A normal semen, so we suspect a female or mixed cause.
  • A semen altered in the number of spermatozoa or in their speed, or in the proportion of normal spermatozoa.

What to expect from testicular and gynaecological ultrasound scans?

Testicular ultrasound provides information on the volume of the testicles and the presence of testicular tissue alterations. In this way, we can diagnose alterations in both arterial (ischaemia, atrophy) and venous (varicoceles) blood flow.

Gynaecological ultrasound provides information about the state of the uterus and ovaries at different times of the menstrual cycle and also provides information about ovulation.
