Substance abuse
The term substance abuse is used to describe a pattern of substance (drug) use that leads to serious problems, such as absence from school, drug use in situations that may put others at risk (driving), or continued use of a substance that interferes with family relationships or relationships with friends.
As a disorder, it refers to the abuse of illegal substances or the excessive use of legal substances.
The most commonly abused legal drugs are alcohol and tobacco.
