Syphilis
Syphilis is a disease caused by Treponema pallidum that is transmitted by intimate genital contact, penetration or by mouth.
Symptoms:
Characteristic is the appearance of an ulcer on the penis, vagina or anus that does not hurt or itch. It occurs between 2 weeks and 3 months after sexual contact.
We must be very careful with this disease because if it is not treated in time it passes into the blood and can have serious consequences even in the brain.
Diagnosis: The diagnosis of syphilis is made, on the one hand, by blood tests to study the presence of antibodies:
- Non-treponemal tests (RPR and VDRL) used for screening and treatment monitoring. These are the first tests we do and the ones we use for disease control.
- Treponemal tests (TPHA, FTA-abs, etc.) are used to confirm the disease when non-treponemal tests are positive.
Treatments: Penicillin is the drug of choice. If the patient is allergic to this antibiotic we have alternatives. Sexual partners of patients should also be treated.
