What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by a virus. There are 5 types: Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E.
Hepatitis B causes a chronic infection that can lead to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.
How is it transmitted?
The hepatitis B virus is transmitted by blood, or by sexual intercourse through penetration, semen and other infectious body fluids. There is a safe and effective vaccine to prevent this infection. It is a good idea to get vaccinated.
Hepatitis C virus is almost always transmitted when there is exposure to contaminated blood through blood transfusions or injections with contaminated instruments. There is no vaccine against HCV infection.
Signs or symptoms of hepatitis B
They occur within a week of infection and are symptoms similar to flu or any other common illness: fever up to 39ºC, muscle aches, malaise, headache, nausea and diarrhea.
Days later the patient may present with yellow skin and eyes with dark urine and itching. In addition, there may be abdominal pain.
Diagnosis of Heaptitis B and C
For hepatitis B, we perform analytical tests to help diagnose the infection.
Hepatitis C treatment
Acute hepatitis requires careful monitoring of liver and other body functions with blood tests. You should get plenty of bed rest, drink plenty of fluids, and eat healthy foods.
Some patients with chronic hepatitis can be treated with antivirals or a drug called peginterferon. These medications can decrease or even eliminate hepatitis B from the blood, reducing the risk of more serious disease.
