Micro-ultrasound technique

The Urology Service of our center GUA Gabinete de Urología y Andrología in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has been the first in the province of Las Palmas to incorporate the Exact Vu micro-ultrasound technology.

This micro-ultrasound ultrasound allows us to diagnose prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men. In the Canary Islands, diagnosis is well below the European average.

That is to say, while in Europe 200 prostate cancers are diagnosed per 100,000 inhabitants, in the Canary Islands this figure is reduced to 66, which means that a third of them are detected compared to the rest of the country.

Therefore, the acquisition of a technology far superior to the standard allows us to obtain an image quality 300% higher than that of other ultrasound scanners. This image quality gives us the possibility of diagnosing a higher number of cases of prostate cancer at earlier stages of the disease. With earlier diagnosis, patients have a better chance of cure and access to better treatments with fewer side effects.

How does it work?

The fact of having such a high resolution microscopic image, 300% higher than other ultrasound scanners, allows us to differentiate in detail the different areas of the prostate. Some of them, as they grow differently from the rest and follow suspicious patterns, can be biopsied immediately, giving us the possibility of offering accurate and immediate diagnoses to our patients.

Micro-ultrasound detects up to 16% of additional images that were not possible to detect with the best imaging until then, magnetic resonance imaging.

Not only does it detect tumors that cannot be seen with MRI, but it sometimes spares patients from having to undergo this type of imaging technique when they cannot undergo MRI because of claustrophobia, pacemaker or allergy to gadolinium contrast.
