Gonorrhea
It is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Contact with the vagina, penis, anus or mouth of a person affected with this disease is more than enough for contagion to occur.
Symptoms:
The most frequent symptoms are pain and burning during urination and whitish discharge from the urethra. Some patients do not show symptoms, which can be dangerous because if left untreated it can continue to infect more people and also increases the risk of serious complications such as sterility or urethral stricture.
Laboratory tests and examinations:
In our clinic we can give the result of this test in 10 minutes thanks to our expert laboratory staff. This allows the patient to leave the office with the complete treatment.
Gonorrhea can be quickly detected by examining a sample of discharge under a microscope (Gram stain). You will also have a culture and, if necessary, a PCR performed on urine samples, which are easier to collect than samples from the genital area. Cultures can provide a preliminary diagnosis within 24 hours. A confirmatory diagnosis is available within 48-72 hours.
TreatmentIt consists of antibiotics such as ceftriaxone and azithromycin. These drugs cure the infection definitively. After the treatment, it is advisable to make a control visit with cultures after 3 weeks to evaluate that the patient is correctly treated and that no sequelae appear.
