The pelvic floor is a set of muscles and ligaments that close the lower part of the abdominal cavity. Its function is to support the pelvic organs in the right position because their normal function depends on it. In addition, the pelvic floor muscles support the stability and balance of the pelvis and lumbar spine.
Pelvic floor contraction exercises, known as Kegel exercises, have for many years been the treatment used for pelvic floor dysfunctions. As the knowledge of biomechanical behaviour and pathomechanics in pathology has evolved, the physiotherapist has been forced to rethink the intervention in the patient. It has been observed that the global approach to posture and the optimisation of the different elements that make up the posture is the key to successful treatment.
In our centre, GUA, we adapt the method of postural re-education to each patient in a personalised way and according to their possibilities. We also believe that each patient should be self-sufficient, so we also dedicate time to teach patients how to perform some of the exercises so that they can control their symptoms and take an active part in the treatment independently.
