Our GUA Urology and Andrology center is a pioneer in Las Palmas in incorporating ExactVu™ micro-ultrasound technology for prostate cancer detection.

Prostate cancer is a highly frequent tumor in men with a very versatile clinical course, being able to behave in a very benign or very aggressive way.

One of the challenges facing prostate cancer urologists is to achieve an accurate and rapid way of detecting prostate tumors. Some of the most important advances in recent years have been MRI and image fusion biopsies.

However, this new ExactVu™ micro-ultrasound technique allows real-time visualization of the prostate and guided biopsies, both systematic and targeted. In this way, tumors that MRI misses can be detected and facilitates visualization of the peripheral area of the prostate. This is important because seventy percent of tumors are detected in this area.

This technology, far superior to the standard, allows us to obtain an image quality 300% higher than that of other ultrasound scanners. This image quality allows us to diagnose a higher number of cases of prostate cancer at earlier stages of the disease. With earlier diagnosis, patients are more likely to be cured and have access to more effective treatments with fewer side effects.

The new system is the first of its kind to be installed in the province of Las Palmas. Thus, the ExactVu™ biopsy is the fastest, most advanced, effective and sensitive alternative to accurately diagnose prostate cancer. "It also manages to significantly reduce the time needed to perform it; it can be done in approximately 20 minutes, much less than the time needed for a fusion biopsy," Dr. Pablo Juárez explains. details Dr. Pablo Juarez del Dago, Medical Director of our center and specialist in Prostate Cancer.

International Cooperation: First Urological Mission to Cameroon

Our Medical Director, Dr. Pablo Juarez del Dago, is participating in the first urological mission in Cameroon with Surg For All at the Hospital Centre Catholique Notre Dame de La Santé Servantes de Marie in Dschang where 47 people were operated on in June 2023.

- This mission has been a very nice way to collaborate directly in the place where help is needed. I am very happy to have done my bit in this cooperation. It has been an infinitely enriching experience and I have been fortunate to be surrounded by a wonderful team, and I look forward to returning.- said Dr. Juarez del Dago on his return.

Surg For All is a non-profit organization whose main objective is to help hospitals in Africa by training health personnel to treat pathologies that currently cannot be treated and negatively affect the health and daily life of the population. In addition, Surg for All cooperates with the donation of medical material.

The means available to many of the hospitals that serve the majority of the population are so meager that any help allows many people to obtain a great improvement in their quality of life.

At our center, we are very happy to have been able to collaborate with this initiative.

Reproduction - Differences between infertility and sterility and treatments

Our Dr. Francisco Juárez del Dago, expert in Sexual Medicine and Andrology, clarifies some recurring concepts in consultation on reproduction.

Human reproduction is a complex process that involves the union of male and female sex cells to give rise to a new being. However, more than 12 out of every 100 couples have difficulty conceiving and it is common to confuse the concepts of fertility and sterility, which can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts within the couple. It is important to clarify that sterility is not a disease, but a situation in which a couple does not achieve pregnancy after a year of normal sexual relations. Infertility, on the other hand, refers to the inability to carry a pregnancy to term after conceiving.

It is crucial that both partners be evaluated together to determine the causes of sterility or infertility. The most common female causes include hormonal disorders and inflammatory diseases, while male causes are often related to low sperm production.

In the Reproduction Reproduction Unit at our GUA Urology and Andrology center, specialists perform a physical examination, ultrasound studies, blood and urine tests with hormonal study, and a semen study in the male to obtain results and provide a first assessment consultation to the couple.

Treatments for sterility or infertility will depend on the cause and may include medications, changes in sexual behaviors, or assisted reproductive techniques such as artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization.

Treatments:

  • Ovulation-stimulating drugs are used to help women produce eggs and increase the chances of pregnancy.
  • Artificial insemination: is a technique that involves placing selected sperm into the woman's uterus at the appropriate time for fertilization.
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF): involves fertilizing the eggs outside the woman's body and then transferring the resulting embryos into the uterus.

Assisted reproduction techniques:

  • ICSI: is an IVF technique in which a single sperm is injected directly into the egg.
  • Egg donation: involves using donor eggs to fertilize with a woman's partner's sperm.

Microsurgery allows operations to be performed on very small structures, such as the tubes connecting the ovaries and uterus (the fallopian tubes) or the vas deferens in men. It is used to repair or reconstruct damaged reproductive tissues or to perform sterilization reversal, for example, vasectomy in men or tubal ligation in women.

The Human Reproduction Unit of our GUA Urology and Andrology center offers solutions to these situations in a simple, orderly and joint way. The goal is to help couples understand what is happening, why it happens and how it can be solved, in order to provide an effective solution and avoid prolonging the process, which can negatively affect the sexual relationship, spontaneity, desire and affection in the couple.

Do you know integrative medicine? Our Dr. Diego Puebla gives us the keys.

Integrative medicine is the result of the union of the technical visions of contemporary and scientific medicine as well as the philosophical visions of naturopathic medicine. This type of medicine attributes the power of healing to the person who comes in response to their ailments, always in consideration of the particular and general context in which the individual is at the time of consultation.

In our center, we have Dr. Diego Puebla, a specialist in integrative medicine. We take this opportunity to ask him the following questions:

What is integrative medicine?

Integrative medicine is an approach to health and wellness that combines conventional medicine with complementary and alternative therapies and practices, with the goal of treating the patient holistically, that is, considering not only their medical condition, but also their emotions, lifestyle and environment. This approach is based on the premise that each person is unique and has different needs and approaches to treating their health. Integrative medicine seeks to find the most effective and personalized treatment for each patient, using a variety of therapies, such as traditional medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic, meditation, nutrition, phytotherapy, massage therapy, among others.

In addition, integrative medicine promotes disease prevention and the maintenance of good health through lifestyle changes such as healthy diet, regular physical activity, stress management and the promotion of positive social relationships.

What are the benefits for patients prescribed integrative treatment?

Patients who receive integrative treatments report significant improvement in their long-term health and well-being. This is due in part to the fact that integrative medicine addresses problems on a deeper level, not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally. In addition, natural treatments are generally less invasive so patients experience fewer side effects.

Doctor, tell us about yourself, what is your background in integrative medicine?

I have a degree in Medicine, specializing in Natural Medicine, Phytotherapy, and Herbal Nutrition. I am a naturopathic doctor and have dedicated my career to accompanying people on their path to holistic health.

I was born in the Argentinean Patagonia, I had a childhood in contact with nature and sports. After a short time studying biochemistry, I discovered my true passion in medicine. However, after completing my medical internship, I realized that the hospital environment was not what I was looking for to develop as a professional. It was then that I approached naturopathy and holistic medicine, convinced that people deserve care that takes into account all aspects of being.

When did you start practicing as an integrative physician?

I opened my own practice more than ten years ago, I have treated people with different illnesses and ages. My holistic approach, time dedicated to my patients and closeness have obtained excellent results. In addition, I have shared my experiences and knowledge in workshops, conferences and congresses, and I have participated as a professor in the Master of Intestinal Health and Microbiota of the IEN School in Madrid.

My passion for learning has led me to pursue a master's degree in Psychoneuroimmunoendocrinology in Barcelona and a postgraduate degree in Plant-Based Nutrition at the National University of La Plata, Buenos Aires.

What is the importance of integrative medicine?

Integrative medicine considers the relationship between the patient and the physician as an important element in the healing process. Therefore, the focus is on the patient as an active and collaborative individual in his or her own healing process. In summary, integrative medicine is a holistic treatment approach that focuses on treating the patient as a whole, considering the patient's physical, emotional and social well-being. This approach seeks to find the most effective and personalized treatment for each patient, using a variety of complementary and alternative therapies and treatments.

optilume

OPTILUME® Do you know the newest minimally invasive treatment for urethral stricture?

Urethral stricture is a pathology that affects about 6,000-8,000 men in the Canary Islands. This disease, more frequent in men than in women, consists in the narrowing or reduction of the duct that expels urine from the bladder to the outside.

The symptoms of urethral stricture are those derived from obstruction and increased resistance to the outflow of urine. If this obstruction occurs for a long period of time it can cause problems in other organs such as the bladder or even irreversible loss of kidney function. The most characteristic symptoms are:

  • Dribbling at the end of urination.

  • Loss of strength in the urinary stream.

  • Urgent and frequent urination.

  • Urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence or urinary retention.

  • Ejaculation without force or with pain.

At GUA Urology and Andrology we offer the innovative Optilume® treatment, a revolution in this field. A minimally invasive alternative to treat urethral stricture, combining balloon dilation of the stricture with the administration of an antiproliferative drug that prevents recurrence of the obstruction, i.e. prevents the tissue from regenerating again, with a success rate of 80%, very promising results for this type of pathology.

Optilume® has shown very positive results in opening the narrowing and preventing further scar tissue formation that often follows surgery.

Optilume® is a long-lasting and effective alternative that has already been endorsed by our patients. Our center is a pioneer in the Canary Islands in offering this treatment.
