MIR: specialist training in urology

After a hard year of study to prepare for the MIR (medical internal resident) residency exam, I am proud to have achieved enough points to gain access to the largest urology department in Spain and with the longest tradition: Fundació Puigvert.

A new fundamental stage in my training as a doctor begins.

The decision has not been easy: once again I have to leave home and leave family and friends, but this period is decisive in my training and training abroad can bring new things to Canarian health care. Of this I am sure. Barcelona is a magnificent city, and as they say, time passes quickly. 5 years.

The decision that led me to choose the Fundació Puigvert was based on two factors: the volume of the service, a fundamental aspect in the training of a surgeon, and the fact that it is a pioneering centre in several aspects of urology, a consolidated benchmark in Spain and the world.

It has a reputation for strict training, which doesn't scare me. As an example, normally in university hospitals the timetable is from 8am to 3pm, but at the Fundació Puigvert it is from 8am to 8pm. I could see this as a discouraging condition, but I think differently: "I only have 5 years to learn all of urology".

Another of the points that tipped the balance towards this centre is the opportunity to train where great urologists of international stature did, such as Dr. Puigvert and Dr. Sole Balcells, who still continues to frequent the hospital and attend teaching activities. World-renowned urologists such as Dr. Antonio Rosales, Joan Palou and Humberto Villavicencio have also frequented its operating theatres.

I could go on writing a thousand reasons that led me to take the decision to leave my homeland, which I am not sorry to leave behind. I face this new challenge with enthusiasm, and with the certainty of returning soon, not only as a doctor, but with my diploma as a specialist in urology under my arm.
