Historic achievement for the Canary Islands healthcare system: Professor Richard Gaston, a world reference in robotic surgery, comes to our center to share his invaluable experience with Dr. Pablo Juárez del Dago.

Prostate cancer is one of the diseases that most worries men all over the world, and the Canary Islands is no exception. According to data from the Spanish Association Against Cancer, 1552 cases of prostate cancer were registered in this region in 2022. In the fight against this disease, a transcendental step has been taken that places the Canary Islands on the map of world medical excellence.

Dr. Richard Gaston has performed more than 10,000 radical prostatectomies during his distinguished career. His pioneering work in the field of laparoscopic surgery made him the first person in the world to perform a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. In addition, he is an authority in urological robotic surgery today. His experience and expertise have been instrumental in the evolution of surgical techniques for the treatment of prostate cancer.

The arrival of the renowned urologist Richard Gaston to Gran Canaria, pioneer and world reference in prostate cancer surgery, is a great step forward in the Canarian healthcare system, thanks to the collaboration established for the training of the medical team led by Dr. Pablo Juarez del Dago, director of the Robotic Surgery Unit of GUA Urology and Andrology and HUSR.

Dr. Richard Gaston has pushed the limits of what other urologists can offer today. His surgical techniques not only have a high success rate in curing prostate cancer, but also focus on minimizing side effects. This means that patients operated on by Dr. Gaston and Dr. Juarez del Dago have a 99% certainty that they will not experience urinary problems after surgery and that their sexual function will not be affected. These are sequelae that, without experience and the proper equipment, are very difficult to avoid.

Dr. Pablo Juarez del Dago, has extensive experience in urological robotic surgery at national and international level. For more than 10 years, he has been collaborating with Dr. Richard Gaston in the field of robotic surgery.

Professor Richard Gaston adds: " I am delighted to be here because I will find the same technology that we have in the big cities in France and in Europe and, in addition, I have known Pablo Juarez del Dago for many years. I have seen his urological education and evolution at the Puigvert Foundation and in many centers of excellence in Europe. I am very happy to join him in this adventure.

We performed, with excellent results, the first five prostate surgeries with the innovative Tulio Coloplast TFL Drive fiber laser.

Our center is an international reference in prostate laser surgery. Dr. Pablo Juarez del Dago and his team have performed five TuLEP prostate surgeries with the new Tulio Coloplast TFL Drive fiber laser. The patients have been discharged the same day.

The Tulio Coloplast TFL Drive fiber laser stands out for its safety, high performance, versatility and comfort. TFL is a more efficient, lighter and easy to transport system with excellent results in the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and lithiasis.

In our center, we have been performing prostate laser surgery for more than twenty years. We have performed more than 3500 prostatectomies with excellent results using different types of lasers. Dr. Pablo Juarez del Dago performs more than 400 prostatectomies per year.

It is important to perform this type of procedure in reference centers. Each laser has its own characteristics and, depending on the needs of each patient, we recommend using one or another. Our goal is to offer personalized medicine to provide the best results to our patients.

The 28th Congress of the Canary Society of Urology organized by the SCU and our center GUA Urology and Andrology ends successfully.

We gathered, for the first time, in Gran Canaria the national and international referents in urological surgery.

The 28th Congress of the Canary Islands Urology Society was held from September 21 to 23 at the ExpoMeloneras Conference Center.

This year's program has focused on current issues in all areas of urology, new technologies, new treatments, sustainability and artificial intelligence. We have offered a complete and pioneering program with a multidisciplinary vision and we have counted with the presence of national and international referents in urological surgery such as Dr. Richard Gaston, Dr. Fernando Gómez Sancha, Dr. Antonio Rosales, Dr. Josep Salvador Bayarri, among others.

In addition, two HoLEP prostate enucleation surgeries performed by Dr. Pablo Juarez del Dago and Dr. Fernando Gomez Sancha were broadcast live with excellent results.

The closing ceremony was attended by Ms. Esther Monzón, Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands.

First of all, I would like to thank the Canary Society of Urology for having trusted me to organize this event, which could not have taken place without the collaboration of all my team at GUA and Urointec, Magna Congresos, ExpoMeloneras and, of course, all the sponsors and Authorities. I would also like to thank all the attendees and speakers for their involvement and adaptability to the small changes of the live event. I am also enormously grateful to have been able to count on the presence of people I admire and who have been my teachers, national and international references in urological surgery such as Dr. Richard Gaston, Dr. Fernando Gómez Sancha, Dr. Antonio Rosales, Dr. Josep Salvador Bayarri, among others. I am happy to have done my bit to bring together colleagues, friends and references around urology, one of my greatest passions, says Dr. Pablo Juarez del Dago, President of the Organizing Committee and Medical Director of our center.

We successfully performed the first three robotic prostate cancer surgeries with the RAS Hugo™ system in the Canary Islands.

Dr. Pablo Juarez del Dago, director of the Robotic Surgery Unit of our center together with his team and accompanied by Dr. Alberto Breda, a world leader in robotic surgery and President of the European Association of Urological Robotics have carried out, in a pioneering way, the first three radical prostatectomies in the Canary Islands with the RAS Hugo™ system of Medtronic, an intervention in which the prostate gland and adjacent tissues are removed.

This type of surgery is minimally invasive, which allows a faster recovery and reduces side effects. Patients who have undergone surgery have received their discharge report only 24 hours after surgery.

For patients, robot-assisted radical prostatectomy has the advantages of minimizing sequelae such as erectile dysfunction or urinary incontinence, reduced blood loss, a lower risk of complications, fewer patient days with a catheter, and less pain. In addition, it offers patients greater comfort and well-being, since the surgical intervention, with very small scars, interferes less with their daily life and allows them to return to their usual activities sooner.

"All three surgeries have been performed satisfactorily without complications and with a postoperative admission of less than twenty-four hours. The evolution of the three patients is optimal and the prognosis with respect to sexual potency and urinary continence of the three patients is very good. We are very satisfied with the result.

We have started with prostate cancer, but we are already working on the design of the program to operate on kidney, bladder and other organ cancers with the aim of offering Canary Islanders the best treatments and the most advanced technology. Working with this type of innovative technique improves the surgical process by 40-50% compared to other types of surgery. This robot-assisted surgery system places us at the highest level of excellence in medical technology. Thanks to these improvements in surgery, side effects such as alterations in sexual function or continence will be minimal," says Dr. Pablo Juárez del Dago.

Each operation lasted approximately two and a half hours and in addition to the doctors, three nurses, an anesthesiologist and a urologist assistant were present in the operating room.
